AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
217 PM PST Mon Jan 6 2025

.SYNOPSIS...Dry weather is expected this week as high pressure
builds in. Gusty winds are forecast in Lake County tonight into
Tuesday.

&&

.DISCUSSION...A weak system has moved through the area overnight
bringing light rain to Humboldt and Del Norte counties. Some
clearing skies are possible this afternoon, but the return of low
clouds and fog, especially in the interior valleys, is expected
tonight. As high pressure sets up in the coming days, a cooling
and drying trend begins, which will reduce overnight cloud cover.
Gusty northeast winds are expected starting tonight over ridges
and higher elevations, particularly in Lake County. Gusty winds up
to 40 mph are possible in some wind-prone areas, such as Cobb and
Middletown, with higher gusts possible on ridgetops. Winds are
forecast to remain breezy in Lake County through the afternoon
Tuesday, and pick up again Tuesday night into Wednesday morning in
the high elevations and ridges.

As skies clear, cold nights are forecast for the lower
elevations, with low to mid 30s possible, even to the coast,
Wednesday and potentially Thursday mornings. There is a little
uncertainty on the daytime temperatures mid to late week in some
of the interior valleys. Cold nights along with a low sun angle
could keep the inversion in place through the day and prevent
significant warming, but if the inversion breaks there is the
possibility for mid to high 60s for the interior valleys.

Ensemble members remain in good agreement for the ridge staying
over our area for the next 7 days. A system arriving in the
Pacific Northwest Friday could bring some cloud cover, but the
chance of rain in recent model runs has trended downward: below
20% in all areas. JB

&&

.AVIATION...Conditions have been improving at all forecast terminals
this afternoon. Shallow humid layer will linger tonight and yield
rapidly fluctuating conditions ranging from VFR to LIFR. First, MVFR
ceilings of 1500 to 2500 feet are expected to continue late this
afternoon into this evening for mostly Humboldt Bay/Eel delta and
impact KACV. Occasional LIFR vsbys of 1SM or less in mist and fog
and cigs below 500 ft may also start to develop, primarily around
Humboldt Bay and in the Eel delta, by mid or late evening. Now the
kicker, light east to northeast winds will develop overnight and
promote drying in the boundary layer. This drying should reduce the
chance for LIFR vsbys and LIFR cigs, especially for KCEC. Trapped
moist air around Humboldt Bay and Eel delta could result in a
resurgence of low clouds and perhaps fog overnight into Tuesday
morning, however. The interior valleys will be protected from the
drying E-NE winds and extremely stable profiles over the valleys
will result in a 100% chance for LIFR overcast and perhaps LIFR in
fog overnight into Tuesday morning. DB

&&

.MARINE...Building high pressure will switch up the marine
conditions on the coastal waters. Without the influence of fast
moving frontal systems, anomalously high pressure can fill into the
area. This will result in moderate northerly winds, with the
strongest being in the leeward side of Cape Mendocino. A long period
swell that arrived to our waters today will rise and fall in wave
heights throughout the week. These swell heights are forecasted to
be between 7-10ft. Steep wind waves are expected to persist in the
outer waters through the week creating conditions that can be
hazardous to small crafts.

&&

.BEACH HAZARDS...A moderately large, long period swell arriving
during the afternoon today through tomorrow evening will create a
threat of sneaker waves for all of the coastlines in NW California.
These waves can arrive randomly and seem to appear out of nowhere.
It is important to not be fooled by an ocean that looks calm. There
can be 30 minutes of small waves before a sneaker wave strikes.
Avoid rocks and jetties. Avoid steep beaches. Stay much farther
back from the water and never turn your back on the ocean.
